It's not very often that words fail me, but today common sense flew out of the window and I didn't have an answer. I was in the High Street (my village, not town) and spotted two small pieces of dog poo on the pavement directly outside the door of the hairdressers shop. I didn't have means to pick it up, and was going to walk away.

Then I thought I would do the right thing by alerting the ladies in the shop, because a customer might step in it and bring it inside with them. The younger lady came out to have a look and said she would deal with it. I felt I had done them a good turn by mentioning it.

Later this afternoon, four hours later, I set off for my walk, up the High Street. The dog poo was still there, one of the lumps looked a bit flattened. It must have been a small dog. I opened the door and called in, both ladies came out. I looked puzzled and said, 'you haven't picked it up'.

The answer from the older lady, presumably the manageress, was, 'we haven't got anything to pick it up with, and haven't got a bin'. It was at that point when I was stuck for words.

What the hell has happened to common sense. They have a toilet, they have toilet paper presumably. The lumps were solid, about the size of walnuts, and would have been easy to pick up. If they didn't want to do that why couldn't they use the paper to pick it up and take it to either the bin outside the paper shop, or the bin outside the church gate, both of them a few yards away. Wouldn't it have been nice if they had shown some community spirit, and saved someone from getting it on their shoes. I walked away in amazement.

I think I need to start carrying poo bags around with me, even though I haven't got a dog.
