A student has revealed she calmly spoke with Florida shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz as she fled the high school massacre not knowing he was to be arrested for it moments later.

A gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine’s Day, killing 17 students and injuring dozens more.

Police arrested 19-year-old suspect Cruz, who is being held in custody.

In the aftermath of the killings, student Alexa Miednik, a senior at the school, realised she had had an incredibly close encounter with Cruz in the seconds after the shooting took place.

She even joked ‘I’m surprised you weren’t the one who did it’ as she fled the building alongside the suspected killer.

Alexa told KHOU-TV journalist Matt Musil: ‘The fire alarm went off and the principle came on the speaker saying “everybody needs to evacuate right now” so that’s what I did.

‘As I was going down the stairs I heard a couple of shots fired, everybody was freaking out saying that it was a gun.

‘As we were walking, the whole class together, I actually was speaking to the suspect Nikolas Cruz.

‘And as I was speaking to him he seemed very – I don’t know what the word is – he was trouble in high school.

‘So I actually joked to him about and said “I’m surprised you weren’t the one who did it”.

‘And he just gave me a “huh?”.’

She said she believed there were two shooters involved, because the shots she thought she heard were coming from a different part of the school building.

US media have since reported there was just a single gunman involved in Wednesday afternoon’s atrocity.

The gunman reportedly tried to blend in with students who were fleeing the school, local news outlets said.

The killer had been armed with an AR-15 assault rifle
