"The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known," says U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has said that a US$285million reduction in the United Nations (UN) core budget is "a big step in the right direction."

The General Assembly 2018-2019 budget is $5.396 billion, just under the $5.4 billion sought by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The United States reportedly negotiated more than $285 million in cuts, according to Sputnik.

"We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked," Haley said, adding that "inefficiency and overspending" at the world body were "well known."

The United States contributes to 22 percent of the budget.

The ambassador, in a statement, said the budget negotiations successfully cutback the UN's "bloated management and support functions."

"This historic reduction in spending – in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable UN – is a big step in the right direction," she added.

"While we are pleased with the results of this year's budget negotiations, you can be sure we'll continue to look at ways to increase the U.N.'s efficiency while protecting our interests."

Earlier this year, the UN's peacekeeping budget was also reduced, by $600 million, under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.

At a meeting held during the annual General Assembly debate in September, Trump said the UN had failed to reach its "full potential due to bureaucracy and mismanagement."

"The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked," Haley commented.

The regular budget of the UN is formed from contributions based on the solvency of each of the 193 Member States and calculated on the countries' average GDP and income per capita.

Comment: The claim of inefficiency may be somewhat true but more or less it serves as a way to legitimize the vengeful act of punishment given out of not being submissive to their unethical demands.
