Lake Titicaca has become so polluted that animals can’t survive in it. Up to 15 tons of mercury end up in the lake every year from nearby cities and illegal gold mines (AP), which causes thousands of fish, frogs and birds to die. The water also contains critical level of cadmium, zinc and copper (AP).
Locals say they get severe stomach problems or red skin blemishes when using the water. The president of Peru promised to spend $437 million on 10 treatment plants around the lake.
